But first….

We are so excited to announce the #IBC founders, Carolyn McCray, Rachel Thompson, and Amber Scott, will be speaking at the Indie Book Event in New York City!  It takes place on July 30th and they are thrilled to share their expertise as panel members.

Carolyn, Rachel, and Amber will speak on two panels on Saturday.  In the morning: Digital Publishing (eBooks, optimizing your Amazon page, and more).

In the afternoon: Social Media and the Writer (author branding, platform building, and more).

If you could join us, we would be happy to see you there. Or, tune into Twitter and Facebook, cause we’ll be live tweeting with the hashtag #IBE11!
Finally, be sure to tune in tomorrow, Tuesday, July 26 to our Blog Talk Radio show at 4:30pm PST where we’ll discuss the event LIVE and all the specifics!
The #IBC’s instant best seller, Dollars & Sense: The Definitive Guide to Self-Publishing Success, written by McCray, Scott, and Thompson, is available for $2.99 on Amazon and provides authors with detailed, step-by-step information they need to become successful indie authors.

In preparation for the Indie Book Event 2011, the #IBC’s Melissa Dalton sat down with Melissa, the Indie Book Event’s founder. We’re excited to share her responses here, and we encourage everyone to stop by the IBE website  and help promote the event on Twitter #IBC11.

Tell us a little bit about your background. What’s your favorite book genre? Are you from NYC originally? What’s the best book you’ve ever read?

  • I have a background in social work and education.
  • My favorite book genre is thriller and true crime.
  • While I live in NY now, I have lived most of my life in New Jersey.
  • The best book I have ever read is “The Little Prince” The simplicity of the story speaks volumes.
How long have you owned an indie bookstore? How do you select the books to feature in your store?
The store is coming up on two years. It is currently undergoing a re-design and re-
structuring. We read all the books that appear on our shelves. I do my selections by
looking for the gems. The books that speak loudly in terms of talent and thoughtfulness.

Tell us about the Indie Book event. How did you come up with the idea for IBE?

My goal with the Indie Book Event is to help up and coming authors with the realities of indie publishing.
My idea to begin the event came from reading new authors and being amazed by their
writing. The big publishers, while publishing great books, get all the glory. There are some amazing indie publishers that dedicate their lives to searching the hidden gems. This event is my way to recognize them and share them with the world.

Are you doing anything differently for this year’s IBE than you did at IBE 2010?

IBE 2011 involved panels and more authors and publishers appearing at the event. This year’s event is also being held in a major NY hotel (The New Yorker Hotel) which will aid with visibility.

When you select your panelists for the Indie Book Event, what do you look for? What are you hoping that your panelists will bring to the table?

I look for knowledge and experience. Whether it be bad or good, all experience should be learned from. And if one person hit all the downfalls of indie publishing before succeeding, that knowledge will prevent someone else from making the same mistakes. On the flip side, we have panelists that have had great success. Many authors seek encouragement and hope above all else. Our panelists will be providing that hope.

Are you anticipating a bigger crowd than at IBE 2010?

We expect our crowd to grow by a big percentage. This year we have a PR company
working with us as well, that has peaked the interest of many media outlets. Through
these new contacts the word is spreading quickly about the event.

If an indie author wanted to promote his or her book at the Indie Book Event, how would he/she need to start that process?

We still have tables available for the event. All they need to do is contact me via ourwebsite

How many sponsors do you have for IBE this year? If someone wanted to become a sponsor, what would she need to do?

Sponsorships are always appreciated and sought after. We currently have GUD magazine
and Five Star Publications as sponsors as well as Foozago Books.

Will you be doing any giveaways or contests?

Five Star Publications has donated the following to the event as door prizes.
The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing (2 copies)
Promote like a Pro (6 copies)
Free 6 month listing at (1 listing)

There will also be an author signing during the lunch break, so come meet us! #woot We’ve got something unique going on – we’ll be signing our eBooks! Oh yea. Bring your smartphone, computer or ereader OR we’ll just email a signed copy of our ebooks to you.

We’re SO excited to participate in #IBE11 – hope to see you there!

About Melissa Dalton…

I’m a writer and a book lover, and I have been all my life. My favorite genre is young adult fantasy, so you’ll likely see lots of YA book reviews here. I’m also interested in the happenings of the publishing industry, so don’t be surprised if you see commentary on that too.
